African startups Flare, Snapplify and Flutterwave were among the winner at the AppsAfrica.com Innovation Awards, which took place in Cape Town last night.

Over 300 entries were received for the awards, which were last night narrowed down to 10 winners. The finalists were judged by an independent panel of leading industry experts.

Kenyan emergency response startup Flare was winner of the Best Social and Messaging Award, while South African e-books startup Snapplify won the Educational Award.

Nigerian payments startup Flutterwave won the Fintech Award, while other winners included Vodacom e-School, Boomplay Music, What3Words, Mazady, Jumo and Bounce News.

“The AppsAfrica.com Awards were first organised three years ago to celebrate the best in mobile and tech across the continent and it is fantastic to see the growth each year, with entries from over 31 countries this year. Even more encouraging is how rapidly African startups are now scaling to compete with established corporates with winners from both,” said Andrew Fassnidge, founder of AppsAfrica.com.

Having picked up an award, this year’s winners will also be invited to exhibit at Africa Tech Summit Kigali in February.
