Joburg best African city to be a startup employee

Johannesburg has been named the best African city in which to be employed by a startup in a ranking of 85 hubs from around the world.

The list, put together by global furnished apartment platform Nestpick, is based on scores in five categories: Startup Ecosystem, Salary, Social Security and Benefits, Cost of Living, and Quality of Life.

Nestpick said the research aims to provide the basis for an informed decision about the best cities in which to settle in as startup professionals.

Johannesburg was the highest ranked African city in 71st place, followed by Cairo (80), Tunis (83), Nairobi (84) and Lagos (85). The list was topped by Singapore, Helsinki, San Francisco, Berlin and Stockholm.

“Certain cities may offer bigger paychecks, but after considering taxes and living expenses, the return may not be so high. Similarly, professionals should consider quality of life: will vacation days be adequate to visit home? Is healthcare as accessible as you would like it to be?” said Ömer Kücükdere, managing director of Nestpick.

“We believe that time taken researching potential employers should not overshadow understanding the best cities in which to work. We hope that our study helps those looking to work in startups identify the cities which may best suit their needs.”
