Claire Reid, founder of South African agri-tech startup Reel Gardening, has been named winner of the Agripreneur of the Year Award in the Future Agro Challenge (FAC).

Disrupt Africa reported last month innovators in the food, agri-tech and agriculture space were set to compete for the Agripreneur of the Year title at the third FAC Global Championships, which took place during the Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC) in Johannesburg.

The Future Agro Challenge involved 50 participants from five continents, and highlighted groundbreaking initiatives addressing national, regional, and global challenges across the food supply chain.

Reid was named the winner of the Agripreneur of the Year award for Reel Gardening, which produces Biodegradable Seed Tape, a seed system that can be grown into a vegetable or herb garden. It has also developed an app that helps users through planting and growing their gardens.

She will now receive mentorship and partnership possibilities, and be given the opportunity to expand her business to different markets.

“A warm congratulations to Claire Reid, we are excited that our championships was held for the first time in its third leg in South Africa and crowning a South African as the most innovative agripreneur,” said Carla Tanas, co-founder of FAC.
