Kenyan social e-commerce startup mookh expands to Namibia

Kenyan startup mookh, a social e-commerce application that allows users to sell products direct from their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, has expanded to Namibia to test its platforms in preparation for further growth.

Launched in September of last year, mookh is designed to allow users to sell products, tickets and digital content, as well as collect donations, through their social media fan pages.

Disrupt Africa reported on the startup in January, when it was preparing to launch in Nigeria and Tanzania, but the approach has now changed after mookh found a local partner in Namibia and decided to explore the market there.

“Namibia is an interesting market that is relatively small compared to most other African countries, and it felt like the right place to test out the platform’s expansion into another market,” chief executive officer (CEO) Eric Thimba said.

mookh is currently running a pilot in Namibia, and hopes to fully launch in the market in January 2017. Thimba said the plans are to maintain focus on the user experience to make it even more helpful to its partners.

“We think we can spur even more productivity with our merchants by continually giving them better tools to help them sell online,” he said.

The startup, which charges commission on transactions, has already processed thousands of transactions.
