Seedstars World has opened applications for its inaugural event in Mali, where it will choose one startup to represent the country at the global final in Switzerland and pitch for up to US$1.5 million in funding.

Seedstars World has already picked winning startups in Egypt, Tunisia, South Africa, Mozambique, and Angola, and will choose a winner in Nigeria tomorrow. It has now opened applications for the local competition in Bamako, Mali, which will take place on September 4.

More than 65 startups from across the world will be selected to pitch at the global final next year, with companies required to be less than two years old, have raised less than US$500,000 in funding, and have built a minimum viable product, ideally with existing traction.

“Seedstars World is a platform connecting investors to the next generation of startup entrepreneurs, pulling the spotlight from Silicon Valley and Western Europe. After three years of our existence, we have definitely confirmed our initial hypothesis that the best way to have an impact in emerging countries is by investing and promoting entrepreneurship,” said Claudia Makadristo, associate for Seedstars World.

“We are constantly expanding into new countries to learn about ecosystems and discover new talent. We are therefore very excited to come to Mali for the first time and see what the country has to offer.”

Up to 10 of the best seed stage startups in Mali will be invited to pitch for the opportunity to compete at the final, with Seedstars World working with Impact Hub Bamako.

“Seedstars World is an amazing opportunity for the best entrepreneurs of emerging countries to be identified,” said Mohamed Keita, co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) at Impact Hub Bamako.

“The selected startups will benefit from access to a great network and community, media exposure and overall the opportunity to connect with leading investors.”
