African e-commerce site Jumia has launched in Angola, taking the number of countries in which it is active to 11.

Jumia said Angolans, living in Africa’s fifth largest economy, had a strong purchasing power and growing interest in consumer goods, which made the country a promising market.

“Angola is emerging as one of the most important countries in Africa. Our goal is to meet the demands of customers in this country with excellent products, prices and services. In addition we want to build deep partnership with local and international brands and distributors who are looking to bring their assortment to Angolan consumers,” said Christina Hawley, managing director for new countries at Jumia.

First launched in 2012, Jumia is already active in Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Cameroon, Morocco, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda and Tanzania, while it has also launched a site in the United Kingdom (UK).

It has been on a particular expansion push of late, with Disrupt Africa reporting in December the Africa Internet Group (AIG)-owned company had expanded into Tanzania. Last month it expanded its operations in Kenya by launching its third logistics centre in the country in the town of Nakuru.

This followed the company’s latest funding round in November, which saw Jumia secure EUR120 million (US$149.5 million) in funding.
