Global seed-stage startup competition Seedstars World has opened applications for its Ghanaian leg, which will see one startup selected to pitch for the chance to win up to US$1 million in funding at the global final in Switzerland.

Seedstars World has already picked winning startups in Egypt, Tunisia, South Africa and Mozambique, while the Angolan leg of the competition takes place tonight. Applications are now open in Ghana, where up to 12 startups will be selected to pitch in front of a jury on August 21.

“Accra has proved itself, time and again to be the leading innovation hub of the continent. The startups who participated on our event last year were phenomenal and we are very excited to come back this year, as we know for sure the bars have been raised and there will be even more amazing startups coming our way,” said Selam Kebede, associate for Africa at Seedstars.

Last year’s Ghanaian representative at the global final was church management app Asoriba. Startups applying this time around need to be less than two years old, have raised less than US$500,000 in funding, and have built a minimum viable product, ideally with existing traction and scalable nature.

The local partner for the event is Impact Hub Accra.

“Impact Hub Accra is at the centre of an exciting and growing startup ecosystem in Ghana. We offer a wide range of opportunities for dynamic startups to grow and scale, such opportunities includes global partnership with organisations such as Seedstars,” said Victor Ofoegbu, community manager at the hub.
