SAVCA conducting survey of South African VC investments

The South African Venture Capital Association (SAVCA) is conducting a survey of venture capital investments over the last decade in a bid to inform decision-making when it comes to industry development and promotion.

SAVCA, which exists to promote the venture capital and private equity profession in Southern Africa, stimulate their expansion throughout the region, has appointed innovation management and commercialisation consultancy Venture Solutions to conduct the survey.

Venture Solutions will aggregate data collected through the survey for trend analysis, with SAVCA hoping to define the current state of the VC asset class through the information provided by angel investors and VCs.

“A key component of investment in early stage entrepreneurial businesses is the investments made by business angel Investors – so-called direct investments by private individuals. It is well known that the estimated total of investments made by angels in the US exceeds the total investments made by VCs. The same is probably true of South Africa,” SAVCA said.

“In order to understand this better, SAVCA would like to encourage angel investors to – under total anonymity – reveal something of their nature, investment activities and preferences. The purpose of this is to outline actual investment activity thereby adding to what is currently limited to anecdotal references only.”
