The Tanzanian leg of the Negawatt Weekend will take place at Buni Hub on March 28-29, aimed at tackling energy efficiency challenges through innovative and tech-enabled solutions.

The event brings together teams of makers, hackers, coders, aspiring entrepreneurs, and energy specialists in a bid to develop innovative ideas for hardware and software solutions to address energy efficiency “challenge statements”.

Teams will pitch solutions to a panel of judges, with the top teams going on to receive further support through a bootcamp process.

The inaugural challenge was held in Nairobi, Kenya, on January 29, while a challenge also took place in Accra, Ghana, over the weekend.

Brian Paul, Buni community manager, told Disrupt Africa events like this boosted the local innovation ecosystem.

“Events like these help to raise awareness on problems of a particular sector, but not only that, they also support the creation of solutions to the challenges, which is of great interest to us, especially when solutions are tech related,” he said.

Paul said it would also increase awareness of Buni and the impact it was having on Tanzanian innovation.

The Negawatt Challenge hosts innovation competitions in various cities globally; with locations selected based on the government’s energy efficiency and low carbon growth, as well as the existence of dynamic and growing entrepreneurial and technology sectors.
