Three teams from Giza, Egypt and one from Harare, Zimbabwe were named finalists in various categories of the Global Startup Battle initiative organised by Startup Weekend, with Egyptian team Kelyati named second runner-up in the Social Impact Track.

The Global Startup Battle initiative aimed to generate a stronger global community of entrepreneurs through the largest startup competition in the world, with hundreds of Startup Weekend events hosted around the world and the winning teams from each event moving forward to compete with one another via a global video competition.

Kelyati, a dialysis booking app that helps renal failure patients find a dialysis centre and book their treatment, was the most successful African startup, named second runner-up in the Social Impact Track. The track also included SMS-based platform Food Match, a platform which links supermarkets with food that is about to expire with customers willing to buy it, which emerged the winner at the Startup Weekend Zimbabwe event in Harare.

A Giza team was a finalist in the Education track – platform for solving problems in relationships Balance – and the Innovators track – entrepreneurial tool Evengo.
