Lagos-based incubator Co-Creation Hub (CcHub) is to host a Raspberry Pi demo event on December 11, with the event intended to showcase Nigeria’s growing maker movement.
The event – Raspberry Jam – invites Pi-enthusiasts to demo their Pi-based projects live – with the top three demos to be voted by the audience -, while a number of on the spot “hack competitions” will also take place with attendees able to quick hack existing projects.
Open to hackers, techies, hobbyists and the general public, the event hopes to demonstrate the skills of the growing maker community in Nigeria, and also introduce people to the Raspberry Pi.
“The Jam is not only a great way to learn about the Raspberry Pi and its capabilities, but to also meet like minded people,” Desiree Craig, technical lead on the youth education programme at CcHub told Disrupt Africa.
“Seeing first-hand what has been built with the Pis serves to demystify the process involved in ‘making’. It’s also a platform to promote the projects being built; for project owners to get feedback about their projects and where possible collaboration opportunities,” Craig said.
According to Craig, the Raspberry Pi particularly merits showcasing to the tech community and the public alike, give its versatility and affordability, making it viable from both commercial and hobby perspectives.
“The Raspberry Pi is a portable, versatile and affordable computer. As such it can easily be adapted to suit a number of software and hardware projects, which would be much harder to do with a regular desktop or laptop,” Craig said.
“Not only does this make it an ideal tool to introduce kids to software and hardware programming, but it’s also great for DIY projects by more experienced developers as well as hobbyists who want to start hacking their own projects together. The Raspberry Pi has also been used for commercial projects due to it’s versatility and affordability.”
The event will be divided into two slots, the first running from 12pm to 3pm, and the second slot taking place from 3pm until 6pm.
Those wishing to demo their projects at the event can apply to do so via the CcHub Raspberry Jam website, and free tickets to attend the event are also available via the site.
