IoT sensing suite provider mbora, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform for smallholder farmers GreenFingers Mobile, and e-health startup EMG Technologies have won the Cape Town pre-selection round of Seedstars World and will now advance to the South African grand final on June 29.

Global seed-stage startup competition Seedstars World has already selected 4 Johannesburg startups for the national final, where the winner will have the opportunity to pitch at the global final in Switzerland next year for US$500,000 in equity investment.

Last night’s event at Workshop 17 saw three Cape Town startup selected to join them. mbora is a solar-powered IoT-enabled sensing suite that delivers real-time visibility to a service provider, GreenFingers Mobile is a mobile first SaaS platform to finance and manage groups of smallholder farmers, and EMG Technologies aggregates medical content from regional experts in one app.

“Last year, we kicked off our entire tour in Cape Town. It was great to see so many new faces, from the startups that pitched to the audience and ecosystem players. We are curious to see which entrepreneur from what ecosystem will represent South Africa this year,” said Claudia Makadristo, regional manager for Africa at Seedstars World.

The other startups invited to pitch were Arts Alternative, Dietnostix, Hi5, Jumpin Rides, MCX Technologies, Regenize, Timu Trust and Yoummday.

Three wildcard startups will be invited to compete at the grand final on June 29, with applications for this still open.
