Startups and startup champions have been named among the winners of the West Africa Mobile Award (WAMAS), which recognised the region’s best mobile and tech companies.

Disrupt Africa reported earlier this month several startups had been shortlisted as finalists for the second WAMAS, after more than 150 applications from across 14 countries were received.

Over 150 mobile industry executives, international media, investors, judges and sponsors attended last week’s event in Lagos, which saw Nigerian payments startup Flutterwave named winner in the fintech category.

The startup’s chief executive officer (CEO) Iyin Aboyeji walked away with the Young Gun of the Year Award, while AppsTech founder and startup ecosystem evangelist Rebecca Enonchong was named Outstanding Industry Achievement.

Other winners included Nairabox, BuyChat, Optiweb Communications, VAS2Nets Technologies, Bloom !nteractive, Airtel Money Niger, Mahindra Comviva, and BattaBox.

“Building on last year’s success, our mission was to promote and honour the fantastic innovation across the mobile and tech ecosystem in Africa. Congratulations to all of the 2017 winners and thank you to the judges, sponsors, and media partners across West Africa that helped to make the WAMAS possible,” said WAMAS co-founder Matthew Dawes.
