Ghana’s Flippy Campus was named the most outstanding startup at yesterday’s DEMO Africa pre-pitch event in Accra, as a result becoming the first to be selected to pitch at the main event in Lagos, Nigeria in September.

Flippy looks to improve campus experience by keeping students up to date on current campus happenings. The startup was chosen by the jury from 10 teams that pitched at the event on the basis of its ability to link innovation, creativity and scalability.

“I am elated at this win and I look forward to learning more from other entrepreneurs and mentors at the DEMO Africa event in Lagos come September,” said founder David Sleek.

Jury members were Todd Holcombe of MEST, Martin Obuya of DEMO Africa, Eric Osiakwan and Juliet Amoah of the British Council. Obuya said he was impressed by the ability of entrepreneurs to create wealth in Africa using innovations.

“What took place today is a clear demonstration of the great ability of entrepreneurs across Africa to create wealth from world class solutions which solve our own problems first, then the rest of the world,” he said.

Disrupt Africa reported yesterday other pre-pitch events are also scheduled for Nairobi tomorrow and in Cairo and Harare later this month. Applications for DEMO Africa are open until June 30. In April, Disrupt Africa published advice for how to make the perfect application for the competition.
