Ghana’s Suba wins Mobile West Africa app developer competition

Ghanaian event-based iOS and Android app Suba emerged as winner from the app developer competition held at the Mobile West Africa event in Lagos, Nigeria, yesterday.

Disrupt Africa reported earlier this week five African startups – four from Nigeria and one from Ghana – were chosen as finalists in the competition, which takes place each year. The five developers were competing for a selection of prizes, including an iPad, NGN10,000 (US$50) in vouchers from SureGifts, and handsets from InnJoo.

Suba, which collects pictures taken at events by all attendees in one photostream, going beyond the usual constraints of a ‘Friends List’, eventually beat off competition from Nigerian apps MOBicure, Taja, Genii Games, and WhizApp to take the top prize.

Developed by Nelson Klutse and Eric Hackman, and based at the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) incubator in Accra, Suba plans to launch in Nigeria this year, as well as Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the American cities of Miami and New York.

“I’ve been blown away by the reception and support Suba has received at Mobile West Africa. We built the app for use cases like this and it’s so encouraging to see people in the industry giving a thumbs up for a good job done,” Klutse told Disrupt Africa today.

“By using shared photo streams based on location, everyone can experience an instant feeling of community by seeing all the pictures of the event and people attending. Users can create, join and share photos in a fun and controlled environment,” he told Disrupt Africa earlier this year.

“We realised the need to have a mobile application that lets users take and share photos with people at the same event. An app that also allows them to relive the event later with multiple social elements: liking and doodling, allowing users to prolong the goofing, and the fun. Hence, Suba was born.”
